stay above the fray
When I was going through one of the hardest seasons of my life, my aunt would say one thing over and over: “Stay above the fray.”
It was her way of reminding me not to get pulled into the mud with people who weren’t committed to doing the work that promotes healing and growth. “If you wrestle with pigs,” she’d say, “you just end up muddy.”
Eventually, the phrase became a calling card between us. What started as a simple soundbite grew into a spirit-filled, grounding message that helped me focus intently on what truly mattered most.
I’m not gonna lie — at first, I hated the phrase. But in time, I realized that staying above the fray is a lifestyle. A mindset. A spiritual posture. It’s choosing to live on a higher plane where truth, clarity, and intention guide and order your steps.
And here’s the thing: it’s not a one-time decision.
It’s a lifelong journey. A slow shaping and reshaping of the heart and mind.
A private evolution that becomes visible over time in how you live, love, lead, respond, and rise.
The individual lessons may change, but the message is always the same:
Rise so you can soar. Don’t shrink for small attitudes or small mindsets. Keep leaning into what God has for you. Let your light shine and be a blessing wherever you go.
Every failure, breakthrough, detour, and opportunity becomes another brushstroke in the masterpiece that is called life.
Am I finished? No — but I am becoming. And that is holy work.
